Drywall calculator

Estimate drywall sheets for room walls and ceilings.

What this calculator covers

Estimate how many drywall sheets a rectangular room needs for its walls and optional ceiling.

The walkthrough keeps the coverage math visible so users can see how perimeter, height, openings, and sheet size affect the final sheet count.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use 4×8 or 4×12 sheets for my room?
Longer sheets (4×10 or 4×12) reduce the number of horizontal seams on tall walls, which can make finishing easier. Shorter 4×8 sheets are easier to handle solo and are more widely stocked. The choice often comes down to wall height and how many people are helping with the installation.
How much should I subtract for doors and windows?
A standard interior door opening is roughly 21 sq ft (3 ft wide × 7 ft tall), and a typical double-hung window is around 10–15 sq ft depending on size. Add up the actual opening dimensions for your room rather than using a rule of thumb for the most accurate subtraction.
Why does the calculator always round the sheet count up?
Drywall is sold in whole sheets, so any partial-sheet requirement means buying another full sheet. Rounding down would leave you short of material mid-job, so the result always rounds up to the next whole sheet.
Does this estimate include a waste allowance?
No — the calculator uses the net area after you subtract openings, without adding extra for waste. For projects with angled walls, archways, or complex cuts, consider ordering an extra 10% beyond the calculated sheet count.

A 12 ft by 10 ft room with 8 ft walls needs about 15 sheets of drywall at the selected sheet size.

Wall area
352 sq ft
Ceiling area
120 sq ft
Sheets needed
15 sheets

Step-by-step solution

  1. 1.Find total wall area from perimeter × wall height: 352 sq ft.
  2. 2.Add ceiling coverage when selected and subtract 21 sq ft of openings to get 451 sq ft of net drywall area.
  3. 3.Divide net area by 32 sq ft per sheet and round up to 15 sheets.

Walkthrough

Visual walkthrough

Drywall planning starts with wall coverage, optionally adds the ceiling, subtracts openings, and then converts the remaining area into sheets.

  1. 01

    Measure the room envelope

    2 × (12 + 10) × 8 = 352 sq ft

Perimeter times wall height gives the total wall coverage area.

  2. 02

Subtract openings and add the ceiling if needed

Doors, windows, and other openings reduce drywall needs, while optional ceiling coverage increases it.

    451 sq ft net area

  3. 03

    Convert area into sheet count

The selected sheet size determines how many full sheets are required, and the result rounds up to avoid shortages.
