Mulch calculator

Estimate mulch volume and bag counts from bed dimensions.

What this calculator covers

Estimate the amount of mulch a bed or landscaped area needs from its dimensions and mulch depth.

This page focuses on simple ordering math: convert depth, compute loose-fill volume, and turn that volume into bag counts.

Frequently asked questions

How deep should I apply mulch around plants and trees?
A depth of 2 to 3 inches is a common recommendation for most landscape beds. Going much deeper can trap excess moisture around plant stems and roots, while too little depth loses the weed-suppression and moisture-retention benefits.
Why does the bag count round up instead of down?
Running short of mulch mid-project means a second trip to the store, so the calculator always rounds up to the next whole bag. If you have leftover bags from a prior project you can reduce the order, but rounding up is the safer default for new purchases.
What bag size should I choose?
Common retail mulch bags are 1.5, 2, and 3 cubic feet. The 2 cubic foot size is the most widely available. Larger bags cost less per cubic foot but are heavier to carry, so consider the tradeoff between economy and handling when placing a large order.
Does this calculator work for irregularly shaped beds?
The calculator assumes a rectangular bed. For an irregular shape, break the area into simpler rectangles, calculate each section separately, and add the bag counts together. Alternatively, estimate the approximate length and width of a bounding rectangle and add a small buffer.

A 12 ft by 10 ft bed at 3 in deep needs about 15 mulch bags at the selected bag size.

Mulch volume
1.11 cu yd
Bag size
2.0 cu ft
Bags needed
15 bags

Step-by-step solution

  1. 1.Convert the mulch depth to feet: 3 in ÷ 12 = 0.25 ft.
  2. 2.Multiply length × width × depth to get a mulch volume that displays as 30 cubic feet.
  3. 3.Divide the exact total volume by the 2.0 cu ft bag size and round up to 15 bags.

Walkthrough

Visual walkthrough

Mulch planning starts with bed volume and then converts that loose-fill volume into bag counts.

  1. 01

    Convert bed depth into feet

    3 ÷ 12 = 0.25 ft

Depth has to match the length and width units before volume math can work.

  2. 02

    Calculate bed volume

    12 × 10 × 0.25 = 30 cu ft

That gives the loose-fill volume as displayed after rounding.

  3. 03

    Convert volume into bags

Bag counts are found by dividing the exact total volume by the selected bag size and rounding up so you do not run short.
