Why does the work schedule affect the hourly equivalent?

The hourly rate is annual salary divided by total annual work hours. Total annual hours equals weekly hours multiplied by weeks worked per year, so changing either input changes the denominator and therefore the hourly equivalent. Two jobs with the same salary but different expected hours have different effective hourly rates.

What schedule assumptions should I use?

A standard full-time schedule is often assumed to be 40 hours per week for 52 weeks (2,080 annual hours). If your job involves paid vacation where you are still counted as a salaried employee, use 52 weeks. If you work fewer weeks — for example in a school-year or seasonal role — adjust weeks worked accordingly to get a comparable hourly figure.

Is the hourly rate shown before or after taxes?

Before taxes. The result is a gross hourly equivalent calculated from gross annual salary. Actual take-home pay per hour will be lower after income taxes, payroll taxes, and any benefit deductions are applied.

How does this compare with an hourly job offer?

Enter the same weekly hours and weeks worked you would have on the hourly job, then compare the resulting hourly rate with the hourly offer. This makes the comparison apples-to-apples when the two roles have different expected work schedules.
