Recipe scaler

Scale ingredient quantities from the original serving count to a new target serving count.

What this calculator covers

Use this recipe scaler to grow or shrink a recipe while keeping every ingredient on the same proportionate path.

Frequently asked questions

How does the scaling work?
The calculator divides your target serving count by the original serving count to produce a scale factor, then multiplies every entered ingredient quantity by that same factor. If the original recipe makes 4 servings and you want 10, the factor is 2.5 and every ingredient quantity is multiplied by 2.5.
Does scaling always produce the same result?
For most ingredients, proportional scaling works well. However, certain elements — leavening agents like baking powder, salt, spices, and cooking time — may not scale perfectly in a straight line. Large batch changes often benefit from a test run and some tasting adjustments beyond the math.
Can I scale a recipe down to fewer servings?
Yes. Enter a target serving count smaller than the original and the factor will be less than 1, reducing all ingredient quantities proportionally.
What happens if I leave an ingredient row blank?
Blank rows are ignored. Only rows where you enter a quantity and a name are included in the scaled output, so you can leave unused rows empty.

Scaling from 4 servings to 10 servings uses the exact serving ratio. The displayed factor is 2.5x, so the first scaled line becomes 5 cups all-purpose flour.

Original servings

Target servings

Scale factor
2.5x
Ingredient 1
5 cups all-purpose flour
Ingredient 2
3.75 cups milk
Ingredient 3
7.5 tbsp butter

Step-by-step solution

  1. 1.Compute the scale factor from target servings ÷ original servings. The displayed factor is 2.5.
  2. 2.Multiply each ingredient quantity by the exact serving ratio, then round the displayed ingredient amounts to three decimals while leaving the ingredient names and unit text unchanged.
  3. 3.Use the scaled list as the adjusted ingredient plan for 10 servings.

Walkthrough

Visual walkthrough

Recipe scaling keeps the proportions intact by applying one shared factor to every active ingredient row.

  1. 01

    Compare the serving counts

    10 ÷ 4

That quotient is the exact factor every ingredient row must follow to preserve the recipe ratio, and the displayed factor is rounded for readability.

  2. 02

    Scale each active ingredient row

    2.5x

Every used ingredient quantity is multiplied by the exact factor while unit text and ingredient names stay unchanged.

  3. 03

    Read the adjusted ingredient list

The scaled rows show what to measure for the new serving target without changing the recipe proportions.
