Hours calculator

Sum up to five work or activity ranges with row-level break deductions and overnight support.

What this calculator covers

Use this calculator for simple timesheet math when you need to total multiple time ranges and keep the break deductions explicit.

Each row is handled independently before the results are summed, which makes overnight shifts and break-heavy schedules easier to review.

Frequently asked questions

How do I enter an overnight shift that crosses midnight?
Enter the start time and the end time as usual — if the end time is earlier in the day than the start time, the calculator automatically treats the shift as crossing midnight and adds 24 hours to the end before computing the duration.
What format do the time fields accept?
Times must be in 24-hour (HH:MM) format. For example, 9:00 AM is entered as 09:00 and 5:30 PM is entered as 17:30. The calculator does not currently accept AM/PM notation.
Can I leave some rows blank?
Yes. Any row where both the start and end fields are empty (and break minutes are 0) is skipped. You only need to fill in the rows you actually want to add to the total.
Why is break time entered in minutes instead of hours?
Break durations are almost always tracked in whole minutes — 15, 30, or 45 — so minutes avoid the decimal fractions you would need to express 30 minutes as 0.5 hours. The final total is shown in both hours-and-minutes and decimal-hours formats.

Step-by-step solution

  1. 1.Read each completed row as a start time, an end time, and a break deduction, ignoring any fully blank rows.
  2. 2.Treat rows whose end time is earlier than the start time as overnight shifts, then subtract the row-level break minutes from each gross duration.
  3. 3.Sum the net row totals to reach 10 hours and 0 minutes, which is 10.00 hours in decimal form.

Walkthrough

Visual walkthrough

Timesheet math works best when each row stays independent before the final sum is taken.

  1. 01

    Count the completed rows

    2 time ranges

Only rows with both a start and end time are included in the sum.

  2. 02

    Subtract row-level breaks

    645 gross minutes - 45 break minutes

Each row's break is removed from that row's raw duration before the rows are added together.

  3. 03

    Read the worked total

    10 hours and 0 minutes

The final total also equals 10.00 hours in decimal form.
